Peter Madden founded the firm with Pat Finucane in 1979. In the ten years that they practiced law the firm developed a reputation for pursuing Human Rights cases at all levels.

Peter has supported Pat's family in their campaign for a fair and independent public inquiry into Pat's murder on 12 February 1989.

He was nominated as Human Rights Lawyer of the Year 2000 by Liberty/Justice.

He is a former member of the Law Society Council.

Peter headed up the legal team during the Bloody Sunday Inquiry between 1998 and 2004 where Madden & Finucane represented the majority of the deceased and wounded on Bloody Sunday. He now represents the families in their pursuit of fair and reasonable compensation.

He has a keen interest in the prevention of human rights abuses at home and abroad.

He travelled to New York City in 1989 to give expert evidence in deportation proceedings against an Irishman held by the US Border Agency. The man successfully challenged the deportation.

He travelled to Capetown, South Africa in 1995 as the legal representative of Relatives for Justice and presented a submission to the Cameron Commission on the Arms Trade.

He travelled to San Francisco USA in 1996 to give expert evidence in proceedings involving two Irishmen held on extradition warrants. They succeeded in challenging the proceedings.

He was part of an Advocate san Frontiers lawyer support mission to the Punjab region in India in 1998 where he supported lawyers representing Sikh victims of State violence.

He travelled to Bogota, Colombia in 2002 to advise three Irishmen who were detained by the Colombian Army and held pending trial. The men were acquitted at trial and returned to Ireland after there were serious concerns about the fairness of the appeal process which was initiated by the State after the acquittals.

Peter travelled to Israel in 2004 to support the families of the twelve Arab citizens of Israel and one Palestinian shot and killed in 2000 by Israeli police.

Peter is currently the managing partner in the firm and holds the brief for all trials in Republic of Ireland.

   
Ciarán Shiels

Ciarán was admitted as a Solicitor in 2001 and was made a Partner in 2006. 

He acted as a lead solicitor during the Bloody Sunday Inquiry where Madden & Finucane represented the majority of the deceased and wounded. Ciaran personally represented six of the families of the deceased and four of those wounded.

Ciarán specialises in Criminal Law and assists in the Management of our extensive and expanding Criminal practice. He acts as instructing solicitor in many high profile criminal trials, including numerous murder and scheduled trials under the Terrorism Act. These have included successfully defending two of the defendants in the "Stormontgate" case.

He represents clients under arrest in Police Stations and defends clients in Magistrates Courts and Crown Courts throughout Northern Ireland.

Ciarán is a solicitor advocate and regularly appears as an advocate on behalf of clients in the Crown Court and Magistrates Court. Special Interest in defending Public Order Prosecutions, Assaults and Serious Fraud.

Michael graduated in Law from Queen’s University Belfast in 2002, was admitted as a Solicitor in 2006, and qualified as a Solicitor-Advocate in 2009.

He previously worked for a respected London criminal firm where he completed his training contract.

Michael is a qualified solicitor-advocate specialising in criminal law. He represents clients throughout each stage of the criminal justice system, from clients under arrest in police stations, through to the Magistrates’ Court, Crown Court, High Court, and the Court of Appeal. He also regularly represents prisoners before the Parole Commissioners of Northern Ireland.

Michael also acts as a solicitor-advocate for clients detained under the Mental Health Order before the Mental Health Review Tribunal.

He has a special interest in Human Rights Law.

Michael has attended the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in New York as part of a human rights campaign team concerning the independence of lawyers, highlighting the murder of Pat Finucane in particular.

He has also acted as an observer at cases before the Criminal Cases Review Commission for the non-government organisation, British Irish Rights Watch.

Michael is a member of the Haldane Society and Lawyers for Liberty.

   
Fearghál Shiels

Fearghál graduated from Queen's University Belfast in 1997 and joined Madden & Finucane in 1998, working extensively at the Bloody Sunday Inquiry, where Madden & Finucane represented ten of the families of the Deceased and several of the Wounded, as a Team Leader until the conclusion of the evidence in 2004.

Fearghál now specialises in applications for Judicial Review and has successfully challenged many public authorities, notably the NI Prison Service, Chief Constable, Northern Ireland Office, Education & Library Boards and Health & Social Services Trusts.

He has also successfully represented clients in Judicial Reviews before the Court of Appeal in Northern Ireland and House of Lords and also has considerable experience in controversial inquests, involving the use of lethal force by the Security Forces, deaths in custody and Social Services care.

Fearghál has a special interest in Prison Law and frequently represents life sentenced prisoners in hearings before the Parole Commissioners.

Fearghál has also successfully represented applicants in actions against the British Government before the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg.
