Alleged bigamist to stand trial
24 February 2011 --
An alleged bigamist is to stand trial accused of marrying another woman while
his wife was still alive, a judge has ruled.
Stanley Jasi, 37, was charged with committing the offence in Harare, Zimbabwe in
July 2006.
Jasi, of Glendhu Manor, Belfast, appeared before the city's Magistrates Court to
decide if the case against him should proceed.
A district judge who heard the preliminary enquiry ruled that he should be
returned for Crown Court trial.
He rejected a legal aid application for two barristers to represent the accused.
Defence solicitor Michael Madden made the request contending, "There are
complicating issues in relation to documents originally from Zimbabwe."
However, Judge George Conner restricted the certificate he granted to one
counsel.
Jasi was released on his own bail of £200 to attend his trial on a date to be
fixed.
