SF councillor on Ormeau charge
24 August 1999 --
A SINN FEIN councillor was in court yesterday arising out of disturbances during
an Apprentice Boys parade on the Ormeau Road in Belfast earlier this month. Sean
Hayes (39), whose Laganbank constituency takes in the Ormeau area, was charged
with hindering the free passage of the parade by sitting on the road. James
Davidson (31), from Upper Springfield Street, Belfast, faced a similar charge.
Defence solicitor Joe McVeigh (Madden and Finucane) told the magistrates court
that both defendants were denying the charge and added: “They wish to state that
any offence that was committed was by the RUC against them.” The defendants were
remanded on bail until October 15 to appear along with nine others who were in
court last Friday on similar charges.
